Sarah and Home Office taskforce to run specialist advice surgery following Windrush scandal

In response to the Windrush scandal, I will be running a specialist advice surgery for constituents who have been affected or who are worried about themselves or a family member. Revelations in recent weeks have exposed widespread failings in the Home Office leading to members of the ‘Windrush generation’ in Croydon and across the UK denied access to services and pressured to leave the country, despite having legal claim to British citizenship.

Next Thursday 17th May, between 15:00-18:00 I will be hosting a drop-in advice surgery at my office, open to any Croydon Central constituents linked to the Windrush generation or other Commonwealth countries. I have secured attendance from members of the Home Office’s specialist Windrush taskforce, experienced immigration caseworkers put in place by the Government to resolve the crisis.

The treatment of the Windrush Generation is one of the biggest failures we have seen from this Government. The Home Office’s own data suggests that their hostile environment policy has actually had no impact on the number of illegal immigrants being deported.

Instead, it has turned the lives of innocent people upside down. People who were invited here as British citizens after the Second World War and have contributed hugely to our country. What’s more, it has cost the taxpayer large sums of money as people are detained or kept in limbo, unable to work.

I’m determined to help any constituents affected by this scandal or who are worried about themselves or a family member. I’m pleased that experts from the Home Office will be joining me. I know that this surgery will give constituents the honest and professional advice they deserve.

It will take place from 15:00-18:00 on Thursday 17th May at my constituency office at 43 Blackhorse Lane, CR0 6RT.

As this is a drop-in surgery, no prior appointments will be needed. If you know anyone who might be in need of advice about this please share this with them. And if you have any questions please do contact my office on 020 8191 7066.
